Reconstruction Records Hall-Witness to Courage, Charity and Vitality of Taiwanese
The Reconstruction Record Hall documents the reconstruction efforts that have been done after the 921 earthquake. The exhibition is laid out in parallel with the missions of the “921 Earthquake Post-Disaster Recover Commission, Executive Yuan,” and is structured as follows: reconstruction milestones, reconstruction funding, geotechnical engineering, infrastructure projects, revival of industry, reconstruction of life, and uniting people’s energy. These display the tremendous achievements of the disaster relief and reconstruction work done by the government and the people.

This gallery uses numbers to portray overall 921 earthquake relief, resettlement, and reconstruction efforts. Collected reconstruction statistics provide an overview of the reconstruction process, and illustrate the sources and amounts of reconstruction funding. This hall lets visitors understand the difficulties and challenges faced during reconstruction by showing the reconstruction of condominium, the relocation of the aboriginal communities, and the conflicts between natural restoration and residents’ livelihood.

The quake-ruined public buildings awakened the public to the importance of the quality of the public construction. The central and local governments and private charitable groups have embarked on a school rebuilding campaign, and have been building numerous attractive new schools embodying the spirit of educational reform—like lovely flowers blooming in the wake of the earthquake. The displays evoke sympathy of visitors for the earthquake victims who had lost their beloved family and homeland during the earthquake. How the quake survivors overcome tragedy with courage, and pull together to establish community industry and cultural features can really inspire visitors.

The design of the Reconstruction Record Hall intended to bring new life to the running track. The outdoor track keeps extending interior, representing the idea of keeping running no matter how hard life is. And the mobile cabinets displaying reconstructive records along the indoor track indicate the long laborious reconstruction process which was like a relay race involving many dedicated individuals.
