Quake Experience Theater Like to know what it feels like in a strong earthquake? The Quake Experience Theater gives you the first-hand experience in what happens when earthquake hits suddenly. The time reverses back to Guangfu Junior High before the earthquake hit. The audience then experiences the magnitude of 921 earthquake when it passed through Guangfu Junior High.
On a platform of about 8.5m * 8.5m in size, the audience sits through a 5-minute long film, which contains two more violent jolts that add up to 40 seconds altogether. The extents of the jolt experienced are as follows: lateral shift ±10cm, anterior-posterior shift ±10cm, and up-down shift ±3cm.
About the Film
The film starts by bringing the audience back to the day when Guangfu Junior High, the predecessor of the Museum, was still in session. We can see in the film the school entrance and the swimming pool. The Museum has preserved the ruins of those structures for retrospection. The day before the earthquake (1999/9/20) was a Monday and the new semester had just begun. Next the film moves to 1:47AM on September 21, 1999, the day of the big quake. After the shakes are over, the film shows the audience actual scenes of rescue efforts and the collapsed houses and school buildings.
